Elephants are the vital part of temple festivals in Kerala. They are used as a tribute to the God and are major attractions during these festivals. Most of the elephants are kept in captivity. The abuse and isolation that they have to face have been a much-debated topic.

But Nalapathenneeswaram Sree Mahadeva Temple in Cherthala, situated in Alappuzha district has decided to go against the tides as they said that they will replace elephants with wooden structures.

20-year-old elephant was illegally transferred to an individual

The Forest and Wildlife Department on Saturday seized a captive elephant that had been illegally transferred by a temple in Alappuzha.

The tusker, 20-year-old Harikrishnan, was confiscated and brought to the elephant rehabilitation centre at Kottoor after it came to light that its custodian, Moodayil Sree Krishna Temple, near Haripad, had transferred it to an individual in Thiruvananthapuram.

The elephant was illegally kept at a location in Nedumangad since September last.

Last week on Friday, hundreds of devotees thronged to the Sree Durga Mahadevi temple at Kuppadi in Kerala to catch a glimpse of the deity mounted atop the temple elephant.

However, not many were aware that this was no ordinary elephant that carried the goddess. In fact, it was not even for real. It was Neelakandan, a 250-kilo life size model made with Plaster of Paris, bamboo, gunny bags and other everyday materials.
