Elephant extinction in the Congo basin could accelerate climate change by allowing 7% more greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, according to a study published in Nature Geoscience.

This would mean an extra 3 billion tons of harmful carbon entering the atmosphere, lead researcher Fabio Berzaghi told The Independent.

Forest elephant extinction would exacerbate climate change. That’s according to a new study in Nature Geoscience which links feeding by elephants with an increase in the amount of carbon that forests are able to store.

Elephants and Climate change

Elephants have definitely been affected by global warming in a variety of ways. These animals rely upon plenty of plants and fruits in their natural habitat to be able to survive on. When the temperatures soar it can be very difficult for these plants and trees to grow like they should. As a result there can end up being a shortage of food in the area for the elephants to consume. Since they need from 300 to 600 pounds of food every day there has to be plenty of great vegetation out there if they are going to be able to survive.

By making new use of historical records, scientists have shown that climate change could have a greater impact on Myanmar's elephants' dwindling numbers than previously thought.

Hannah Mumby from the University of Sheffield, who led the study, found that the already endangered species faces further struggle as even the slightest temperature change can lower their chances of survival dramatically.

Today is World Elephant Day, a day to recognize and raise awareness of the dangers facing one of the planet’s most majestic creatures. Native to Africa and Asia, elephants are symbolic of many things across cultures, revered and admired for their intelligence and empathy. And they are in great danger.
