The Heritage Animal Task Force has urged both the central and state governments to strictly enforce the act and rules on parading captive elephants during festivals as there are frequent incidents of their violation and torture of captive elephants occurring in different parts of the state.

The seven-member herd of wild elephants which strayed into Shantipuram mandal from the thickets of Bangarpet range of Karnataka a couple of days ago was finally driven back into their habitat at Nachukuppam (Karnataka), 3 km from Ramakuppam on Friday evening. The operation was accomplished by a team of about 60 forest personnel from Chittoor, Palamaner and Kuppam ranges, in addition to the coordinated efforts of their T.N. and Karnataka counterparts.

The Centre for Eco-Cultural Studies (CES) had invited that internationally known lady, Sangita Iyer, who has produced an award winning documentary “Gods in Shackles” to visit our country with a laudable motive in mind, to create an awareness and to spare a thought, for the elephants particularly those taken in our ‘Peraheras’; (they stand for hours and walk for miles to entertain and please us!); elephants are also being used for heavy work such as log clearing.

Promoting human-elephant coexistence is crucial across elephant ranges, as, in most places, elephants and people are interacting with each other frequently. Collective efforts by various sections of the society play a vital role in increasing people’s tolerance towards elephants and reducing pressures on them.
