Six elephants have fallen to their deaths in Thailand while trying to save each other from a notorious waterfall.

Officials said the incident occurred after a baby elephant slipped over the waterfall in central Thailand's Khao Yai National Park.

Two other elephants were also found struggling on a cliff edge nearby, and have been moved by Thai authorities.

The waterfall, known as Haew Narok (Hell's Fall), has a history of similar incidents.

During one of their performances, one elephant is made to prance around a tank while bobbing her head in and out of the water - much to the delight of the giggling audience.

Their trainers sit on their necks as they plunge in and out of the water, tugging at their ears, prodding them and shouting commands.

One of the highlights of 2013 came in the summer. We were absolutely honoured to be a part of the rescue of a beautiful old lady Boon Thong. She was living at a trekking camp in Pattaya, she spent her days chained on a very short chain and living in filthy conditions. Her every move controlled; a miserable life.  She had wounds on her body from poor care and hook induced injuries. Boon Lotts Elephant Sanctuary (www.blesele.org) had been to see her and of course the decision was made for her to be rescued and to live out her years in absolute bliss at BLES.
