Who are Elephant Haven?

Elephant Haven founders; Tony Verhulst and Sofie Goetghebeur had a vision of creating a Haven for elephants to retire and to facilitate the resocialization and rehabilitation of captive‐kept elephants whilst providing information and research into their complex needs and behaviors. Tony and Sofie have assembled a team of experts and organisations who share their passion for elephants with the aim to create a European ‘Elephant Haven’.

Asian elephants have been at the centre of many large campaigns surrounding their lives in captive environments. However little is known about many aspects of their lives when living as semi wild in a large protected forest.

We are delighted to have formed a partnership with The Centre For Compasionate Conservation, this will enable us to invite students to watch and study our elepahnts lives in the forest, how far they travel, what they eat, the relationship with their mahouts and many other key questions.

Mahouts Elephant Foundation has recently completed a remarkable challenge. With a dedicated team around us we walked an incredible 130km over 8 days through Thailand’s deepest forests, on hot and steep roads and through remote hill tribe villages. We reached heights of 6000 feet, we had to wade through rivers, smash down undergrowth and climb over fallen trees. We started some days at 4am following beautiful elephants with head torches on watching the sunrise over the hills and valleys.
