At any moment the elephant groupthat my tribal tracker and I were observing in Mudumalai Wildlife Sanctuary(currently Mudumalai Tiger Reserve) southern India, was likely to move towards us. We were in a very perilous position and we\ would not have been able to run or save ourselves if they came close to us. However, I was very confident ofmy tracker’s experience. He was silent, silent for most part, communicating only through smiles or his eyes; I needed to just follow him unquestioningly. While observing the herd, he constantly picked up mud from the ground and let it fall from his hand to get an idea of the wind direction. As the movement of the wind was from the elephants’ side towards us, he gave me a signal that we were safe and I continued my observations.
